Ocean Beach Park

Ocean Beach Park

The SF Parks Alliance supports proposition K on the November 2024 ballot. The  measure supports creation of Ocean Beach Park, a 17-acre recreational space along San Francisco’s western oceanfront.

The creation of Ocean Beach Park builds on the Great Highway’s success as a popular pedestrian and recreational destination. Establishing a full-time, permanent park in this space will provide broader, more equitable access to open space, especially for those with non-traditional work hours who can’t currently enjoy the weekend-only access. The initiative also aligns with the city’s climate goals, as converting the roadway to a park supports emission reduction and habitat conservation in line with the Ocean Beach Master Plan and San Francisco’s Climate Action Plan.

In endorsing proposition K on the November 2024 ballot, SF Parks Alliance is reinforcing its commitment to expanding the public realm and access to these spaces. Crucially, the ballot measure for this transformation also includes traffic improvements in the outer avenues that would funnel traffic away from neighborhood streets and improve traffic flow, as well as time to engage the community and create a plan for the future park, both of which we believe are essential to Ocean Beach Park’s success.

This project offers economic benefits as well, with potential increases in local foot traffic that could support neighborhood businesses. Additionally, the cost to establish the park won’t be nearly as high as other new waterfront parks as this space is already a successful and well utilized park without any added infrastructure investment. Even as a part time park, this space receives ~10,000 visits each weekend, making it the city’s third most popular park. Plus, the conversion to a full time park will result in significant savings on sand management compared to maintaining a roadway (currently sand clearing costs the city $1.7 million each year!). Vote yes on Proposition K this November!
