Our Work: Community Partners

Friends of Lakeview Summit Steps

Friends of the Lakeview Summit Steps are a community vision to turn an unused hillside in the Ingleside neighborhood into a destination featuring water-wise plantings, gathering spaces and a statement stairway.

This energetic community group has rallied around the design of Lakeview Summit Steps, which has been driven by core community values around: accessibility, safety and environmentalism.

The design creates a safe pedestrian stairway with beautiful landscaping that connects Summit Street to Lakeview Avenue, encouraging visitorship and neighbor connection.

The design will also improve the Walking Score for the surrounding neighborhood and give all residents improved access from Summit Street to the businesses and services on Ocean Avenue and the Balboa Park Bart Station.

There are even specific design components for: erosion control, water drainage back into the groundwater table, low water consumption via drought-tolerant plants, energy efficient solar lighting, habitat creation for native plants, beneficial insects, birds and other wildlife. The design also showcases the panoramic view from the top, and there are plans to include an art feature such as tiled statement steps or an educational sculpture garden.

Project Type: Greening, Trail Clearing & Maintenance
