Projects
SF Parks Alliance partners with communities and city agencies to make permanent improvements to parks and public spaces across San Francisco. Our project managers work to ensure that these spaces are built and maintained through a process of extensive outreach, deep community and ongoing stewardship.
Crane Cove Park
Crane Cove Park opened in 2020 along San Francisco’s Central Waterfront, transforming a formerly inaccessible industrial shoreline. New amenities are in the works for the 7-acre park, including two distinct children’s play areas and a dog run.
Dogpatch Arts Plaza
Dogpatch Arts Plaza was previously a dead-end street, and has since been transformed into an arts-focused public pedestrian plaza, located at 19th and Indiana Streets in San Francisco’s Dogpatch neighborhood.
Eagle Plaza
Eagle Plaza will transform a 13,000 square foot pedestrian-oriented plaza, replacing asphalt and concrete with trees, vegetation, seating, and the ability to close the plaza to cars for community events. It will become a destination outdoor venue for events and festivities and a cultural landmark that celebrates the neighborhood’s rich Leather & LGBTQ heritage.
Harvey Milk Plaza
This project seeks to work with the community to reimagine Harvey Milk Plaza as a welcoming, vibrant space that honors Harvey’s life and legacy and celebrates his enduring importance to the LGBTQ+ community.
Hickory Alley
Hickory Alley had long struggled with litter, graffiti, dumping, and safety issues. SF Parks Alliance partnered with neighbors and local organizations to revitalize and improve the space, resulting in a beautiful mural and pedestrian thoroughfare that connects Hayes Valley and Civic Center Plaza.
India Basin Waterfront Park
San Francisco’s newest waterfront park, India Basin Waterfront Park, is one of the most significant park projects in San Francisco history. Once complete, it will combine the renovated India Basin Shoreline Park and the 900 Innes property into one grand 10-acre waterfront park, complete with a new playground, amphitheater, and more.
Ledyard Alley
Ledyard Alley in Bayview is an important alley for pedestrians that was uncared for and often used for dumping trash. SF Parks Alliance and Friends of Silver Terrace have partnered to transform the alleyway into a safe and inviting space for the community complete with new lighting, plants, and a mural.
Let’sPlaySF!
Let’sPlaySF! is a partnership between the San Francisco Recreation & Park Department and SF Parks Alliance to transform 13 of San Francisco’s most timeworn playgrounds into dynamic hubs for creativity and family life. Public funds, combined with contributions from generous donors, will ensure that this initiative transforms all 13 playgrounds by the end of 2024.
Linden Alley
Linden Alley is one of San Francisco’s foremost “living alleys.” Once an unremarkable side street in Hayes Valley, the alley has been transformed into a pedestrian-oriented destination featuring seating, beautiful landscaping, and local businesses. Linden Alley has been hailed as a successful model for shared public spaces in the Bay Area and beyond.
Lisa & Douglas Goldman Tennis Center
The Tennis Coalition, in partnership with SF Parks Alliance and the SF Recreation & Park Department, completed a $27 million upgrade of the legacy tennis courts in Golden Gate Park in February of 2021. Players of all ages can now enjoy 16 new regulation tennis courts, 5 pickle-ball courts, an expanded clubhouse, a garden and patio, and 20,000 additional hours of play annually.
Moss Metamorphosis
SF Alliance was awarded grants for the improvement of Moss Street in 2020. Over the course of four years, we’ve worked closely with neighbors to make Moss Street a safe and welcoming habitat for local plants, animals, and humans alike through new string lighting, murals, planters, and more.
Muriel Leff Mini Park
Muriel Leff Mini Park is a small and beautiful green space located in the Richmond District. In collaboration with SF Rec & Park, Muriel Leff, and the local community, SF Parks Alliance completed the renovation of this mini park in spring 2023 featuring a new nature play area, boulders, dry creek bed, picnic tables, and plantings.
Octavia Commemoration Project
The removal of the Central Freeway demonstrated San Francisco’s commitment to creating vibrant, livable neighborhoods, and is now regarded as a model for sustainable cities. This project will explore, design and implement a physical commemoration of Central Freeway’s existence, and the importance of its removal in Market/Octavia neighborhood.
Phil Arnold Trail (Oak Woodlands)
Formerly named for the remnant Oak Woodlands forest, the newly renovated trail in Golden Gate Park was dedicated in honor of Phil Arnold, a longtime advocate for parks, open space and trail opportunities in the greater Bay Area. The trail welcomes pedestrians and bicyclists that begins at JFK Drive just west of McLaren Lodge and continues past knolls, horseshoe courts, and ends at 6th Avenue. The trail also connects Golden Gate Park to the Bay Area Ridge Trail from Twin Peaks and Mount Sutro.
SkyBridge on Stevenson
SkyBridge on Stevenson is a community-led effort to revitalize the 500 block of Stevenson Street in SoMa, transforming the alley into a vibrant hub of arts, commerce, and activity. This multi-year project involves murals, pop-up events, and custom lighting and streetscaping.
Slow Streets Stewardship
Slow Streets were introduced to San Francisco’s residential streets as a response to the pandemic and a collective need for more public space. As the program moves towards permanence, SF Parks Alliance is committed to providing support for local residents serving as stewards.
Slow Streets, Fast Friends Murals
We’re installing ground murals on Slow Streets across the city to connect people with their neighbors and their public spaces.
The Blue Greenway
In collaboration with local organizations and public agencies, SF Parks Alliance is advancing the Blue Greenway initiative. The Blue Greenway is a stretch of land that will connect 13 miles worth of waterfront parks and public spaces along San Francisco’s southeast waterfront, from Oracle Park south to Candlestick Point.
The Greenhouse Project
Urban agriculture is essential to a sustainable future for our cities. The Greenhouse Project, with the support of SF Parks Alliance, is working to develop Portola Farm, a permanent and community-centered urban agricultural hub at 770 Woolsey, the site of SF’s last remaining historic greenhouses.
Tompkins Stairway Garden
Once a trash-covered hillside, San Francisco’s Tompkins Stairway Garden is now a safe and welcoming street park, featuring a drought-tolerant garden in year-round bloom and a colorful tiled stairway. With support from SF Parks Alliance and dedicated attention from surrounding neighbors, the site is now a community greenspace and pedestrian corridor serving the Alemany Farmers’ Market and nearby schools and shopping districts.
