Our Work: Programming & Events
October is SF Stairway Month, a celebration of San Francisco’s 900+ public stairways!
The first ever SF Stairway Month is packed with free events that showcase our love and commitment to these public spaces, including a guided walk across five of the city’s tiled staircases and a talk with the author behind the book Stairway Walks in San Francisco.
Where Did SF Stairway Month Come From?
The concept of SF Stairway Month was first raised by Burnside Mural+, a resident-led initiative (and SF Parks Alliance Community Partner) to create a visual representation of the colorful history of Glen Park through the creation of a mural and tiled stairway. The Burnside Mural+ group started installation of the tiled stairway on October 1, 2024. On this day, San Francisco District 8 Supervisor Rafael Mandelman’s office also officially designated the month of October as the first San Francisco Stairway Month in the City and County of San Francisco.
What's So Important About Stairs?
San Francisco is not only home to over 900 public stairways – dozens of them are tiled and otherwise decorated in the aim of beautification, community storytelling, and civic pride. SF Parks Alliance views public stairways as important public spaces that offer many of the same benefits as neighborhood parks, parklets, and trails. The organization has supported many community groups working on public stairway projects, including Burnside Mural+, Goettingen Neighbors Group, and Tompkins Stairway Garden. A full list of SF Parks Alliance community partner projects can be found here.
