Octavia Commemoration Project

The removal of the Central Freeway demonstrated San Francisco’s commitment to creating vibrant, livable neighborhoods, and is now regarded as a model for sustainable cities.

This project will explore, design and implement a physical commemoration of Central Freeway’s existence, and the importance of its removal in Market/Octavia neighborhood.

Timeline: Ongoing

About

Since the Central Freeway was demolished in the early 2000s, and later replaced by Octavia Boulevard, Patricia’s Green and new housing, the community has discussed the possibility of telling this the story with a commemorative installation in Patricia’s Green or along the Boulevard. With this in mind, the Market/Octavia Citizens Advisory Committee (MOCAC), in partnership with the San Francisco Planning Department and San Francisco Parks Alliance (SFPA), has undertaken an exploration called The Octavia Project.
