Slow Streets Community Outreach Timeline

April 2020

In response to Covid-19, SFMTA launches the first phase of an exciting new initiative: Slow Streets.

November 2020

Following conversations with Slow Street communities, SF Parks Alliance identifies areas of the program that need support. SF Parks Alliance applies for a Community Challenge Grant (CCG) to help create new Slow Streets and improve existing Slow Streets.

September 2021

SF Parks Alliance is awarded a CCG, which enables the organization to conduct community outreach and to provide supplies and event support to Slow Street Stewards.

December 2021

After extensive outreach and citywide Slow Street Steward community meetings, SF Parks Alliance creates the Slow Street Steward’s Playbook. This resource includes ideas and advice for current and new Stewards to improve their own Slow Street.

December 2022

Through community outreach, SF Parks Alliance develops the People’s Slow Street Plan. This plan is a vision for creating a safe, seamless, and citywide network of Slow Streets by 2024.

March 2023

In collaboration with SF Parks Alliance and Slow Street communities, SFMTA develops the Slow Street Mural Pilot Program. This program intends to create a seamless guide to help Slow Street Stewards beautify their street with street murals.

June 2023

SF Parks Alliance partners with SOMCAN, a community group in SOMA, to plan a beautification project for SOMA Slow Streets. With SF Parks Alliance support, SOMCAN successfully creates the first Slow Streets street murals.

February 2024

SF Parks Alliance put out a community survey asking Slow Streets neighbors for their input on artist selection, mural aesthetics, mural locations, etc for the upcoming Slow Streets Fast Friends project. The survey received 500+ responses.

March 2024

SF Parks Alliance hosts a Slow Streets Fast Friends kickoff meeting with Slow Street Stewards. SF Parks Alliance and Slow Street Stewards will install street murals on 9 Slow Streets, which will provide benefits like beautification and traffic calming. The project is the culmination of three years of outreach and learning.

March & April 2024

SF Parks Alliance hosts mural focus groups with Slow Streets Stewards, community members, and the artist to begin the mural concept process.

April 2024

SF Parks Alliance, SFMTA, Slow Streets Stewards, and artist conduct site visits at each street location to determine preferred mural locations.
