In this Faces & Places we had the opportunity to chat with Loring Sagan, a community member who helped steward Linden Alley from a dirty alley into a vibrant community space. Read on below to learn about how he did it!

Linden Alley, in Hayes Valley, was a dead and filthy alley back in 2004.  I have always believed that public-private partnerships can create unique and creative improvements, specific to local conditions – so I asked the City if they would consider contributing $100,000 to redo Linden Alley if our merchant group  committed $100,000 as well,  and they agreed.

We received our grant in 2005 and it took 4 years of plans, permits, and coordination with DPW, PUC, ADA, DBI,  and various  other government agencies to complete the project.

SF Parks Alliance was the fiscal sponsor, and they were a great partner throughout the process. They helped us secure a Community Challenge Living Alley Grant to install new benches, sidewalk gardens and overhead hanging lighting in the alley.

“When there’s a will, there’s a way! As frustrating as it can be, it is worth it!”

This project brought a common denominator and interest for all of the adjoining property owners and residents. Together, we shared in the planning process and fundraising for the project.

A property owner fixed up a decaying building, a coffee shop moved in, we designed landscaping to create green space and provided a place for rainwater to return to our plantings.

The city repaved the alley so it would all be on one level, with no distinction between street and sidewalk. As all of these improvements unfolded, we began attracting families, kids, and tech workers grabbing a cup of coffee on their way downtown. It didn’t take long for a very loyal gathering spot to be born.

For someone looking to get started in their own community project, I would say: when there’s a will, there’s a way! As frustrating as it can be, it is worth it.

Perseverance, tenacity, resourcefulness (and patience!) are imperative. The process can be exasperating, but the end result is transformational!
