Love Letters to San Francisco

Love Letters to SF is a traveling art installation that celebrates civic pride and the spirit of San Francisco.

Our Love Letters

We asked people across San Francisco the question, “What makes SF shine?” and collected thousands of responses on shimmering handwritten cards at parks, farmers’ markets, parklets, and plazas.

These golden cards have been turned into an art installation of giant block letters spelling out ‘Shine On SF’, that creates a unique and dynamic portrait of the things residents love about the city.

Collecting Love Letters

Through the work of dozens of volunteers, the cards we collected have been used to build the Love Letters to SF art piece, which displays the cards on giant gold block letters spelling out the message ‘Shine On SF’.

Golden Trees

To gather the golden cards used in Love Letters to SF, we conducted one giant listening exercise through a project called the Golden Trees.

People from all walks of life were asked to answer the prompt “What makes San Francisco shine?” and place their response on card on a Golden Tree. Each site also featured a different craft activity by a local artist, created in partnership with SF Etsy.

We are always popping up somewhere so be sure to check back and watch our Instagram for the latest updates on where we’ll be next!

After popping up at two tree lighting events – first in Civic Center Plaza on Dec 1, then in Golden Gate Park on Dec 2 – the Love Letters to SF installation had an extended residency in and around the San Francisco Ferry Building from December 3-31.

In January 2022, we were thrilled to be a part of The City Canvas: A Paint the Void Retrospective – an art show in historic Building 12 at Pier 70 that celebrated the artists and murals that transformed the city into a canvas when San Francisco shut down for COVID shelter-in-place.

February 2022 we joined a community event in the Sunset at Judah & Great Highway celebrating the Sunset neighborhood and history of the Great Highway Park.

April 2022 we celebrated with BloomSF during their weeklong downtown reopening events. Our Love Letters to SF greeted cable car enthusiasts at the Powell and Market cable car turnaround and invited them to fill out their very own love letter to SF.
